I have a confession to make: I’ve been a pizza guy for almost a decade.
And I’m still a pizza girl.
When I was a kid, I was obsessed with pizza.
I loved it.
It was my whole identity.
But when Papa John introduced me to the pizza brand, it was not an easy decision.
As a child of the ’90s, pizza was an entirely new experience to me.
In fact, the first pizza I ever ate was at my dad’s place.
He used to order pizza for my mom and me all the time.
We all had a passion for pizza and, well, I can tell you, it’s one of my favorite childhood memories.
For me, the pizza was a way of life.
I loved being able to grab a slice and go.
There’s a lot of nostalgia associated with the pizza, and that was one of the reasons Papa John decided to bring us back to the brand.
The Pizza Hut chain introduced the pizza as a standalone product, so Papa John took a different approach.
Papa John’s was able to tap into a growing audience, and they were able to do it in a way that made sense for the brand and its pizza-loving customers.
“The Pizza franchise is a great example of how our brand and products are resonating with our customers,” says Andrew Dannemann, President and Chief Operating Officer of Papa John.
So how did this come about?
Well, back in 2004, Papa John bought Pizza Hut and it quickly became one of their biggest customers.
“When we bought Pizza, it became apparent that Pizza Hut was a strong competitor,” explains Dannewan.
“And we decided to focus on our franchise and expand our brand.
We had great growth opportunities.
One of those opportunities came in 2007, when we acquired Pizza Hut.
Then in 2009, Papa Joes Pizza introduced the Original Pizza, a new take on the classic pizza that was introduced to us in 2003.”
Pizza Hut launched their Original Pizza in November of 2007.
That was the first time we were able do a brand refresh, and in our experience, it made sense.
While the pizza itself has changed a lot, there are still a lot in common with Papa Johns Original Pizza.
According to Papa John, the Original has a thin crust, with plenty of cheese, and it’s packed with flavor.
“[The Original] has a rich, creamy, soft crust that is bursting with flavor,” explains Andrew Dainman, General Manager, Pizza and Pasta.
What we found is that the original pizza was really appealing to kids.
They loved the softness of the crust, and the soft, pillowy feel of the sauce.
A child’s pizza craving was born.
Today, Pizza Hut is one of our biggest customers and the Original is one reason why.
Plus, as a parent, it gives me great pride to know that Papa John is the first brand that I grew up with.
To help celebrate this milestone, we’re launching a new pizza menu in partnership with Papa J. Pizza.
